OWNER // STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH

BASMIN, CSCS, FMS, PN2, CSAC

Joel grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, playing every sport he could, with his favourite memories being throwing a football with his dad on the street outside his home. He went on to play post-secondary football with both the University of Regina Rams and the Saint Mary's Huskies, becoming an All-Canadian at both programs and earning team MVP at Saint Mary's. His career continued at the national and professional level as a two-time Football Canada national team athlete in tackle and flag football and as a CFL alumnus with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Joel holds a Master of Science in Kinesiology, specializing in applied sport performance. His credentials include CSCS (National Strength and Conditioning Association), Precision Nutrition Level 2, FMS, Olympic Lifting, Certified Speed & Agility Coach, and NCCP Competition Development Certified Football Coach.

As an Owner and Strength & Conditioning Coach at Ignite, Joel leads the high-performance training department and oversees the integration of performance testing, sport science, and clinical services across the organization. He coaches professional athletes, U Sports and high school athletes, youth athletic development programs, general population adults, and those recovering from injury, with particular expertise in football and speed/power athletes. Joel also manages Ignite's athlete monitoring systems, VALD force-plate testing, CMJ profiling, conditioning protocols, and data-driven decision-making for athlete development.

Joel currently serves as Defensive Coordinator for Team Canada 5-on-5 Flag Football (IFAF), leading the national program on its pathway toward the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He is also the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for Football Canada (2016–Present), Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for University of Saskatchewan Football (2017–Present), and a Strength & Conditioning Consultant for the Sport Medicine & Science Council of Saskatchewan.

Joel's philosophy is rooted in a holistic, athlete-centred approach. He believes optimal performance comes from addressing movement quality, strength, conditioning, recovery, nutrition, and mindset as one cohesive system. His programming blends sport-science precision with practical coaching experience, ensuring athletes move well, build confidence, and develop long-term resilience. Education is central to his coaching style, helping athletes understand the why behind their training so they can take ownership of their development.

Outside the gym, Joel is a proud father of two and spends most of his free time with his family—usually at a field, a rink, or around the BBQ smoker. He enjoys cooking, exploring new activities with his kids, and continuing to learn about sport science, performance testing, and the evolving landscape of high-performance football.
